My mother was spending most of the day alone while I was at work. She wasn't unhappy as such, but she wasn't particularly engaged either. We tried the Social Engagement Programme first and after the third month she started asking me whether the outing calendar was ready yet. That shift alone made the whole thing worthwhile. The monthly summaries are useful too — I have a proper picture of how her weeks look now.

We used the Family Coordination package first because we genuinely didn't know where to start. My father had moved back in with us and none of us had a clear picture of what a good week might look like for him. The written support plan they put together after the planning session gave us a structure we didn't have before. It's not complicated — it's just organised, which was what we needed.

The companion who visits my mother-in-law has been coming for four months now. She is consistent, which matters more than anything else. The end-of-day note is brief but it tells me what they did and whether she seemed settled. I work until 6:30 and it genuinely helps to know that the afternoon was fine before I come home.

My parents are both in their late seventies and they live independently, which they want to keep doing. The coordination service helped us map out what local resources exist near their home and set up a basic support rhythm. My wife and I feel less like we're constantly reacting and more like there's a plan. That's a bigger change than it sounds.

Honestly I was a bit uncertain at first — it can feel strange handing over part of someone's daily routine to people outside the family. But the planning process was careful and they didn't push anything we weren't comfortable with. After the first month I noticed my grandmother was talking about the hobby group she'd joined. She hadn't mentioned anything new in a long while.

The communication is what I appreciate most. I travel for work frequently and the end-of-day notes mean I'm not calling my husband every evening asking how Dad is. We can all read the notes and we're on the same page. The companion is reliable and my father seems comfortable with her — which wasn't guaranteed.

How three families found their footing

Details shared with permission. Names changed for privacy.

The Tan household — Petaling Jaya

Social Engagement Programme · Started March 2025

The Situation

An 80-year-old grandmother, recently moved from Penang to live with her son's family in PJ. She had left behind her neighbourhood, her temple community, and most of her weekly routines. Her son was concerned she was withdrawing and not adjusting well to the new location.

What Cendana Arranged

A Social Engagement Programme starting with low-key indoor activities in the first month, moving to community centre visits and a Mandarin-speaking hobby circle from month two. A companion accompanied every outing. The family received a written monthly summary throughout.

Three Months On

The grandmother had built a small network of regulars at the hobby circle. She was asking about upcoming outings unprompted. The family described the change as "gradual but definite" — she was less withdrawn and had something to talk about at dinner. The programme continued into month four.

The Rajan household — Cheras

Family Coordination + Daytime Companionship · Started January 2025

The Situation

Both adult children in the household worked full-time. Their father, 76, was at home alone five days a week. There was no clear daily structure and the family felt they had no real picture of how his days were going. He had mild mobility limitations but no other constraints.

What Cendana Arranged

An initial Family Coordination package produced a written support plan and identified three suitable local resources. The family then added the Daytime Companionship Programme for three weekdays. Sessions included conversation, shared lunches, and light activities. End-of-day notes were sent to the family contact each afternoon.

After Four Months

The family described the notes as "the biggest practical change" — they finally had a consistent window into his days. His daughter said he now greeted the companion "like a person he knows well, not someone who arrived." The programme was still running as of May 2025.

The Ahmad household — Ampang

Family Coordination Programme · Started February 2025

The Situation

Three siblings, each with their own families, sharing responsibility for their 82-year-old mother in Ampang. Coordination between them was inconsistent and sometimes led to overlap or gaps — one weekend nobody would visit; the next, three people would arrive at once. Communication mostly happened over WhatsApp and was hard to follow.

What Cendana Arranged

A Family Coordination package involving all three siblings. One planning session produced a shared written timeline that all three households could access and update. Cendana also provided a curated local resource list covering the Ampang area and arranged a quarterly check-in call with the sibling group.

Result

The family described the shared timeline as "something we should have set up years ago." Visits became more evenly distributed and the WhatsApp group shifted from coordination to conversation. The coordination package was renewed after three months and one sibling began exploring the Social Engagement Programme for future months.
