A service built around people, not procedures
Cendana was founded by a Kuala Lumpur family who wanted something they couldn't quite find — steady, warm company for an older relative, with honest communication back to the household.
Back to HomeStarted from a personal experience
Cendana began in 2019 when Azlan Ibrahim, a working father in Kuala Lumpur, noticed that his mother — living alone in the family home in Jalan Kuching — was spending long stretches of the day with little to occupy her. Her neighbours had moved, her weekly routines had shrunk, and the usual festive gatherings that kept her connected to people had become less frequent.
Azlan and his siblings wanted to do something practical. They searched for organised companionship and social activities suited to older adults in the city, but most options felt either too institutional or too informal. There was no clear middle ground.
So they built one. Cendana started as a small arrangement for a handful of families in the Jalan Kuching neighbourhood. Word passed between households, and the service expanded steadily. By 2022, Cendana was coordinating companionship sessions and social programmes for families across the wider Klang Valley.
The name comes from the Malay word for sandalwood — a wood known for its calm, steady fragrance and for the comfort it has traditionally brought to Malaysian homes. That association guides everything we do.

What guides us day to day
Steadiness above all
We believe older adults deserve company that shows up reliably and behaves consistently. Cendana places steadiness — not novelty — at the centre of every programme.
Listening before acting
Every family has a different household. We spend time understanding that household before we suggest anything, and we stay attentive to how preferences change over time.
Families kept in the loop
We think of families as partners, not just clients. Regular written updates, shared timelines, and clear communication keep everyone informed without creating additional work.
A small, committed team
Azlan Ibrahim

How we hold ourselves accountable
Written agreements
Every programme starts with a clear written outline of what is included, how sessions are scheduled, and how families receive updates. Nothing is left vague.
Companion suitability checks
All companions and coordination staff go through a structured background review before working with any household. Families receive a brief profile ahead of the first session.
Personal data protection
Household and personal information is handled in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Details are not shared beyond what the family explicitly agrees to.
Scheduled family check-ins
Beyond regular written notes, we schedule brief telephone or in-person check-ins with the family at agreed intervals to discuss how the programme is working.
Programme reviews
After the first month of any programme, we sit with the family to review what is working well and adjust the plan where needed. This review repeats every three months.
Clear scope of service
Cendana is a companionship and coordination service. We are transparent about what we do and do not do, so families can make well-informed decisions from the start.
Home companionship and family coordination in Kuala Lumpur
Many families across the Klang Valley juggle work, children, and extended household responsibilities at the same time. When an older parent or grandparent is at home during the day, it can be difficult to find structured, dependable company for them that fits naturally into a household rather than disrupting it.
Cendana was built specifically for this situation. Our three programmes — Family Coordination, Social Engagement, and Daytime Companionship — are designed to work alongside a family's existing routines, not against them. Whether a family needs help mapping out a support plan, wants to build a richer social calendar for an older relative, or needs warm, present company through working hours, each programme starts with a conversation rather than a checklist.
We operate out of Jalan Kuching in central Kuala Lumpur and serve households across Petaling Jaya, Cheras, Ampang, Mont Kiara, and other areas of the Klang Valley. Our team speaks English, Bahasa Malaysia, and Mandarin, allowing us to communicate comfortably with families from different backgrounds.
Cendana does not provide nursing, personal care, or any regulated professional service. Our companions offer general home company, errand coordination assistance, and social activity accompaniment only. Families looking for a warmer, more organised day for an older relative are welcome to get in touch and discuss what might work for their household.
